  • Curator's comments

    See 1856,0607.44 for first state.

The sitter has been identified as either Mary Killigrew, daughter of Sir William Killigrew and attendant on the princess Mary at The Hague, or Cecilia Crofts, whom Thomas Killigrew married in 1636 (see Pennington, p. 251).
After the double portrait at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire (collection of the Duke of Marlborough). See also a painting at Wilton House, Wiltshire (Larsen 817) and a version of the single figure in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch.
The etching was copied probably by Richard Gaywood (see P,4.260 and under Globe 201).
