- Curator's comments
- This is the first state of the artist's second and reversed attempt at etching the composition. For discussion of Parmigianino's prints see A.E. Popham, ' Catalogue of the drawings of Parmigianino', 1971, I, pp. 13-17. There are a number of studies related to the composition, four of which are in the BM (see the list in Popham under no. 195; A. Gnann, 'Parmigianino, Die Zeichnung', Petersberg, 2007, nos. 232-252), and a grisaille oil sketch in the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas (illustrated in D. Ekserdjian, 'Parmigianino', New Haven and London, 2006, fig. 259).
