- Curator's comments
- This is one of a series of the planets of which there are 5 prints in the BM. An inferior impression of this print is at 1929,0422.11.
For illustrations of the whole series, see Friedrich Lippmann, The Seven Planets, International Chalcographical Society, 1895, pls. F1 - FVII. Lippmann attributed the design of the series (one of which is dated to 1533) to Gabriele Gioliti de' Ferrari, an attribution which was altered convincingly to Girolamo de' Grandi by Thieme-Becker.
Additional information: Part of the composition and figures of this print, particularly the Saturn above, were used in an Italian maiolica plaque (British Museum,1878,1230.373); see D. Thornton and T.Wilson, 'Italian Renaissance Ceramics: a Catalogue of the British Museum Collection,' vol.I, London, 2009, pp. 286-287, cat. no.169).
