Text from 'Gainsborough and Reynolds in the BM', cat.144:
The wife of General John Carnac; curiously, despite its modern fame, the portrait was never paid for by the family and remained on Reynolds' hands. It turned up in his sale in 1796 and is now in the Wallace Collection.
