What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Title-page to a series of forty-one plates (title-page, foreword and thirty-nine illustrations) representing the main events which occurred in France between 1559 and 1570. The set is known through different etched versions (printed in four languages: French, Latin, German and Italian), and a woodcut version. The etchings were executed by Perrissin and Tortorel following a contract signed on July, 23 1569, while the woodcuts are probably the work of copists, intended for a cheaper market.
