  • Curator's comments

The British Museum exhibited approximately 1000 Benin "bronzes" in 1897-98. Approximately 200 were then kept and the rest were sold, some to the institutions indicated in [BEN-] PIC DOC 50. N F Barley, 25/11/1997. Circumstances: Af,A60 contains a number of groups of photographs of Benin "bronzes", which were previously stored in the envelopes comprising [BEN-] PIC DOC 50. It is unclear which photographs belong with which envelope. Some of the envelopes are dated 1898. [BEN-] PIC DOC 50 indicates some of the "bronzes" depicted have at some stage been held by the Foreign Office, Horniman, Pitt Rivers, the Liverpool Museum, Crown Agents for the Colonies, a Miss Cutter and possibly the Berlin Museum and British Museum.
