Remove old lacquer. Clean to remove tarnish and improve legibility
Lacquered, tarnished, dirty.(1845.08-25.7: small hole in the left-hand side gilded cross-hatched area.)
Immersed in acetone for 1 minute and brushed gently. Then swabbed with acetone to remove lacquer thoroughly. Swabbed with sodium bicarbonate in a paste with industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) to remove tarnish. Rinsed off by swabbing with distilled water. Final swab with acetone. All swabs cotton wool.
