Remove old lacquer. Clean to remove tarnish and improve legibility
Lacquered, tarnished, dirty.1845,08-25.57: nick at the top. 1845,08-25.54, 58: rouge visible in some areas of missing niello but these are visible only under magnification are not likely to harm the object: therefore left
Lacquer removal: Immersed in acetone for 1 minute and gently brushed. Swabbed with acetone.Tarnish removal: Swabbed with sodium bicarbonate in distilled water paste, rinsed off by swabbing with water, then swabbing with Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol), then swabbing with acetone.All swabs made of cotton wool.
