What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Treatment proposal

    Remove old lacquer. Clean to remove tarnish and improve legibility

    Condition

    Lacquered, tarnished, dirty.

    1845,08-25.57: nick at the top.

    1845,08-25.54, 58: rouge visible in some areas of missing niello but these are visible only under magnification are not likely to harm the object: therefore left

    Treatment details

    Lacquer removal: Immersed in acetone for 1 minute and gently brushed. Swabbed with acetone.

    Tarnish removal: Swabbed with sodium bicarbonate in distilled water paste, rinsed off by swabbing with water, then swabbing with Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol), then swabbing with acetone.

    All swabs made of cotton wool.
