What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Treatment proposal

    Remove old lacquer. Clean to remove tarnish and improve legibility

    Condition

    Lacquered, tarnished, dirty. Traces of rouge visible on the frame.

    Treatment details

    Immersed in acetone for 1 minute, then cotton-wool swabbed with acetone, to remove lacquer.

    Dirt and rouge on the frame softened with Industrial methylated spirits (IMS - ethanol, methanol) applied with a cotton wool swab. Toothpick softened in IMS also used for this. Not able to remove all rouge by this means.

    Cotton wool swabs of sodium bicarbonate in distilled water paste then applied to remove tarnish. Residues removed with distilled water applied using cotton wool swabs, then by swabbing with a cotton wool swab of IMS, followed by a cotton wool swab with acetone .
