Printed 1) black, 2) white, 3) pink, yellow and blue, and 4) black "x" and other minor touches. Edition of 50 plus 10 artist's proofs, printed by Aldo Crommelynck, Paris, and published by Petersburg Press, London and New York in 1976.
This is the first of three prints loosely based on Jasper Johns' painting 'Corpse and Mirror', 1974. This print is an aquatint; the second was a lithograph printed and published by ULAE; the third was a screenprint published by Jasper Johns and Simca Print Artists. The title may refer to the game Exquisite Corpse in which a drawing is started by one player, folded over and passed to the next to be continued. Johns alters the direction of the hatching in this etching to create horizontal lines that suggest folds. The reflective surface of a mirror is suggested by the 'X' on the right and its surrounding pink tone, while the strong vertical axis creates an image and its double.
