What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Text from Frances Carey & Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no.50
    Vogeler was taught etching by Hans am Ende, a fellow resident at Worpswede, in 1894; the following year he acquired his own press. The thirty-five etchings he made in the years up to 1902 are the most striking examples of the idyllic and romantic side of his art, and are strongly influneced by the medieval fairy-tale pre-Raphaelitism associated with Morris and Burne-Jones. The young women, pairs of lovers or fairy-tale subjects are usually set in frames composed of flowers, like the cyclamen seen in this print. The story that it illustrates must be Grimm's tale of the six princes turned into swans by their wicked step-mother, and only freed by the efforts of their sister, who knitted a coat of nettles for each of them which turned them back into human form.
    The high point of his early etching is the portfolio 'An den Frühling' ('To Spring') of ten prints published in 1899. After 1902 he only made a dozen more prints before the First World War broke out. Almost all his early etchings were reprinted in successive editions into the 1920s and the plates survive in the Worpswede archive.
