What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Plate 6 of the 'Schwarze Scenen'-portfolio. The leather bound portfolio was published by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin in 1905. It consists of one title sheet with an original etching, showing the artist lying on a sofa and smoking a cigarette, an index sheet and six etchings. The index sheet lists the title of the prints contained within the portfolio: Inhalt: Meditation Im Kahn Die Marter Reiter Am Lagerfeuer Tänzerin Zweikampf verso: 'Von diesem Werk wurden fünfzig handschriftlich numerierte Exemplare auf kaiserlichem Japan in der Kupferdruckerei von O. Felsing in Berlin hergestellt. Die Drucke sind von Künstler unterzeichnet. Exemplar No 49.'
