Signed, verso, "F. van der Mijn".
  • Curator's comments

Comparable to Van der Mijn's painted 'Portrait of a Woman' of 1756 in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. A3956). Van der Mijn spent most of his career in England, yet his work is rare, especially as a draughtsman. These drawings (including 2003-7-30-4) must have been intended for framing like oil paintings and pastels.

This item has an uncertain or incomplete provenance for the years 1933-45. The British Museum welcomes information and assistance in the investigation and clarification of the provenance of all works during that era. Rudolf Heinemann's drawings were later owned by his widow, Lore Heinemann, whose estate consigned the Van der Mijn and other drawings to Christie's in 1997. She had kept them in her 5th Avenue apartment in New York. For a period between 1997 and 2003 the Van der Mijn drawings were with the dealer Spink-Leger in London.
