What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Treatment proposal

    Remove amulet from fabric mount. Remove adhesive residues. Apply big number if neccessary.

    Condition

    Amulet was pinned to the mount and there was residues of old adhesive located underneath the amulet. The surface of the amulet was also extremely dirty.

    Treatment details

    Under magnification the pins were moved away from the amulet so it could be lifted off the mount. The surface was swabbed with 70:30 IMS to distilled water on cotton wool swabs. The excess adhesive was softened with this solvent and removed with a scalpel under magnification.
