    • The Amazon Frieze
  • Description

Marble slab of the Amazon frieze of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. It represents combats between Greeks and Amazons.
This slab shows five figures, three Greeks and two Amazons, and figure carved across the join between two slabs (1020 and 1021), a Amazon. On the left an Amazon, on the slab join, aims a spear to the right, where a Greek is fighting with an Amazon over a falling Greek. The spear-throwing Amazon leans back to launch the spear with her right hand. Her left arm is stretched out to the right with the two hind paws of a feline skin hanging from it. She wears a tall helmet with crest, chiton belted at the waist leaving her right breast and right leg bare and boots.
Further right a Greek, nude apart from a crested Corinthian helmet, chlamys, sword belt and scabbard with the sword in it, strides forward to the right with his shield thrust out to protect a falling companion. The falling, nude Greek is about to collapse. He kneels on both knees, supporting himself with his right arm. An Amazon, to the right, aims a blow to the left with her right arm raised to strike the falling Greek with her axe. The Amazon wears a chiton belted at the waist and her hair is drawn up on top of her head.
To the right a Greek prepares to attack a falling Amazon. The Greek, seen from the back, strides to the right with his right arm raised to strike the falling Amazon with his sword. The Amazon falls backwards to the right with her right arm raised above her head. The Greek wears a cloak, draped over his left shoulder, and holds a shield and, probably, held a sword. The Amazon wears a chiton belted at the waist and split at the left knee.
The weapons were attached in metal, carved or may have been painted.
Slab 1021 is part of a sequence that continues on slab 1020.
