The 'shojo' are popular and mythical monkey-like creatures who are very fond of sake and are symbols of celebration. In this New Year print two actors of the day imitate them, a great sake jar between them. One holds a ladle and rides on a huge water-turtle; the other holds a giant sake-cup. His kimono displays the mallet motif of the popular god Daikoku. In the background are cranes, and the trio of lucky plants - bamboo, plum blossom and pine. All of these symbols are associated with good luck, long life and the New Year. The signature is 'The brush of Torii Kiyonobu'.
