  • Curator's comments

Strang made thirty aquatints and etchings in 1900 illustrating Kipling's short stories, which were published in 1901 in bound portfolios by Macmillan & Co. A pamphlet catalogue for an exhibition by R. Gutekunst, 16, King Street, St James's, is in the solander box, and lists the prints in a different order to David Strang. An annotation on the pamphlet states that Campbell Dodgson's full set (registration numbers 1949,0411.1915-1944) was the one exhibited, and was one of only three sets which were printed before the plates were steel-faced. David Strang notes also that these were the artist's first aquatints.
