        Inscribed on plate with name of engraver (in reverse, top margin) and 'Elfte Platte' ('eleventh plate') in top left corner; lettered with production detail, date, title, and dedication to Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria.

    After the 1654 painting by Ter Borch in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; another version is in Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; see Arthur K. Wheelock, 'Gerard ter Borch', Washington, 2004, cat.no.27.

  • Acquisition notes

    1842,0806.1 to 321 were all purchased from W & G Smith, who had acquired the collection of Joseph Harding, from whom they all came. The acquisition was recommended to the Trustees by Josi on 31 March and 29 April 1841, but only purchased in 1842.
