  • Description

    Gold note-book/aide-mémoire with decoration on both sides in carved mother-of-pearl and red, blue, white and green enamel. At each corner is a grotesque head in mother-of-pearl, in the centre is Cupid as Vulcan on one side and Cupid as Neptune riding a dolphin on the other, framed by enamel scrolls with four carved mother-of-pearl shell-shaped ornaments on a background of enamel trellis-work. Clasped with a pencil in gold and mother-of-pearl. The interior of the covers is inlaid with mother-of-pearl and has three ivory leaves hinged to the spine.

    Text from catalogue of the Hull Grundy Gift (Gere et al 1984) no 421:
    The fashion for these notebooks continued throughout the nineteenth century and in the absence of marks, the precise dating of this example remains uncertain.
