Working with teachers is central to the schools team's
work. Through training days, courses and practical workshops, we
offer ways of looking at the Museum collection and the history and
cultures it presents in stimulating and thought-provoking
ways.
Our courses are for teachers in primary and secondary
schools with a focus on history, art and design,
cross-curricular approaches and special educational needs.

Courses for all teachers
Tailor-made courses
The Schools Team is able to provide whole-school or other
professional development courses on a variety of subjects. In the
past these have included:
• Using online resources and interactive whiteboards to explore
objects
• Using museums for English and literacy
• Developing enquiry and investigation through museums
• Early Years and museums
Courses can be developed or modified to meet your specific needs
and can be run at the Museum or in your school. Prices start at
£250 for a half day and £400 for a full day, depending on numbers,
and do not include lunch or refreshments.

Printmaking using multicultural inspiration

Experts from the Curwen Print Study
Centre use a variety of printmaking techniques to extend your
skills base, providing a wealth of material and techniques to take
back to school.
A particular focus will be on
interpreting objects from diverse cultures. The course is aimed at
Secondary teachers, but Primary colleagues are very welcome.

Teaching ancient Egypt at KS2
Thursday 10 November 2008,

This one-day course is designed to
help you plan your teaching of Egypt and integrate a Museum visit
into your scheme of work. We will suggest learning activities for
the classroom and for the Museum and explore ways of developing
literacy and speaking and listening skills using objects.

Islamic art: creative links (KS1/2)
Friday 14 November 2008,

Artefacts in the Islamic Gallery will
provide a stimulating source of pattern and design ideas for a
painting and collage unit of work linked to healthy eating.
Chinese New Year of the Ox (KS1/2)
Friday 16 January 2009,

Learn about how New Year is celebrated
in China, research animals in the Chinese collection and make
festive decorations based on animals in the Chinese zodiac.
Sculpture: Carnival of the animals
Friday 5 June 2009, 10.00–16.00
Explore the roots of contemporary
carnival in the Museum’s African collection and create a fantastic
sculpture of a costumed dancer for a carnival band.
This course supports the new
VLF/Teachers TV programme Carnival of the birds.

Japanese woodblock prints
Friday 5 December 2008,
09.30–16.30
The Museum holds one of the world’s
great collections of Japanese prints by masters such as Hiroshige
and Utamaro. This course combines viewing examples of prints with a
practical session run by expert printmaker Hiroko Imada, designing
and cutting blocks using traditional methods.

KS3 History: teaching Empire
Thursday 18 June 2009, 09.30–16.30
This course will use the Museum’s
collection to explore the nature of empire across time and across
cultures. With guest tutor Michael Riley, Director of the Schools
History Project, you will explore how objects can give access to
alternative voices about the experience of empire and consider the
importance of empire in understanding contemporary issues such as
globalisation, immigration and cultural diversity.
