Courses for teachers

Working with teachers is central to the schools team's
work. Through training days, courses and practical workshops, we
offer ways of looking at the Museum collection and the history and
cultures it presents in stimulating and thought-provoking
ways.
Our courses are for teachers in primary and secondary schools
with a focus on history, art and design, cross-curricular
approaches and special educational needs.

Courses for all teachers
Tailor-made courses
The Schools Team is able to provide
whole-school or other professional development courses on a variety
of subjects. In the past these have included:
- using museums for English and literacy
- teaching with objects
- developing enquiry and investigation through
museums
- early years and museums
Courses can be developed or modified to meet
your specific needs. Prices start at £250 for a half-day and £400
for a full day, depending on numbers, and do not include lunch or
refreshments.

Planning a visit to the British Museum

Members of the Schools Team will be on hand to
show you relevant galleries, suggest ways of structuring your visit
and advise you on suitable learning activities for your students.
When booking, please indicate what topic and subject you are
working on and with what year group.

Special Educational Needs
Free training sessions on running handling
sessions for small groups of students with visual impairment
or other special educational needs.

Training is required for these sessions and is
available free to teachers and helpers at 16.00–17.30 on the
following dates:

Once you have attended the training you will
be able to run any of these sessions at the Museum as part of your

teachers
Preparing for the new primary
curriculum
The Rose Review of the National Curriculum at primary level has
made a number of recommendations for change. We have developed
a set of one-day courses for teachers to help you start considering
how to adapt your teaching to meet these recommendations and how to
use museums to support the new curriculum. This is your chance
to get ready for 2011.
Preparing for the new curriculum at KS2:
enquiry through ancient Egypt

This one-day course looks at teaching
cross-curricular enquiry skills and processes within a topic on
Ancient Egypt. It will offer the opportunity to explore how to set
up enquiry based studies both in the classroom and during a museum
visit, time in the famous Egyptian galleries and lots of teaching
ideas!

Preparing for the new curriculum at KS2:
making connections through ancient Greece
Monday 24 May 2010
09.30–15.30
We will explore ways of using a historical
topic, in this case ancient Greece, to develop children’s learning
in the new curriculum area of human, social and environmental
understanding. The day will focus on working in the classroom, but
will also include approaches to unlocking the potential of museum
visits.

cross-curricular themes
Thursday 17 June 2010
09.30–15.30
The new curriculum will include both subjects
and thematic approaches to teaching and learning. This one-day
course will explore the opportunities a museum can offer for
developing cross-curricular themes and how to relate themes to both
subjects and areas of learning.

Art and design: essential practical skills
Thursday 12 November 2009

A hands-on course designed to help
non-specialist teachers in primary schools to develop a range of
practical skills and build confidence. Working in the galleries and
classroom it will explore researching ideas, using sketchbooks,
drawing, designing and printmaking and will generate many ideas for
teachers to take back into school.

Art and design: supporting gifted and talented students
Thursday 4 March 2010

This practical course will focus on
identifying the characteristics of pupils with talent in art and
design and on providing appropriate experiences to take their
learning forward. Teachers will develop ideas from museum
artefacts, try out a range of art activities and explore practical
strategies for challenging able pupils.

Art and design: preparing for the new primary curriculum
Friday 23 April 2010

Focusing on one of the proposed six areas of
learning, this course will consider how to inspire children to be
successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens
– key aims of the new primary curriculum. Through practical
workshop sessions participants will explore a variety of key art
and design processes essential to the new curriculum.

We are pleased to offer the following courses
as part of our partnership with the Visual Learning
Foundation.
All about printmaking in the primary school (KS1 and KS2)
Friday 20 November 2009
10.00–16.00
Using the Indian and Chinese collections as
inspiration we will cover paper block printing and engraving,
two-colour printing using polystyrene blocks, repeat pattern and
border printing and simple registration and rotation.
Spring blossom: flowers in art (KS1 and KS2)
Thursday 18 March 2010
10.00–16.00
We will start by researching flowers in the
Museum’s Asian collections and then create art pieces using Sumie
ink and coloured wash, gold and silver lustre grounds.
Olympic athletes in action (KS2)
Thursday 29 April 2010
10.00–16.00
In this course we will explore techniques of
building sculptural form in 3 –D materials, including the use of an
aluminium armature.

Courses for secondary teachers
Japanese woodblock printmaking
Friday 19 March 2010

The Museum holds one of the world's greatest collections of
Japanese prints by masters such as Hiroshige and Utamaro.
This one-day course for secondary teachers combines viewing
examples of prints with practical sessions run by expert printmaker
Hiroko Imada, designing and cutting blocks using traditional
methods.
