This story and activity session takes place in the Paul Hamlyn Library. After sharing an African story students take part in hands-on work and discussion and find out more about the library itself. They then visit the Sainsbury African Galleries to look at beautiful objects from across the African continent.

Maximum group: 30
Duration: 60 minutes in Library, followed by lunch break and a self-guided visit to the African Galleries
£20 per group (including a free small copy of the book read during the session)

Clothes from around the world
(Nursery and Foundation Stage)

This session introduces young children to the cultural diversity to be found at the British Museum and helps develop confidence in using ICT. Children use the interactive whiteboard, dressing-up costumes and clothing from the Museum’s handling collection to gain an introduction to what is worn in different parts of the world. They take photographs in the galleries using digital cameras and are photographed in costume against a green screen, with a background digitally inserted. A CD of images created within the session will be sent to your school afterwards.

Art in the early years
(Foundation, Y1 and Y2)

Use the Museum’s collection to inspire art and design. Students spend time in the galleries and make prints they can take away at the end of the session.

African maths

As they explore examples of African beadwork from the Museum’s handling collection, students explore shapes, patterns and counting in this lively interactive session.
