This story and activity session takes place in the Paul Hamlyn
Library. After sharing an African story students take part in
hands-on work and discussion and find out more about the library
itself. They then visit the Sainsbury African Galleries to look at
beautiful objects from across the African continent.
Maximum group: 30
Duration: 60 minutes in Library, followed by lunch
break and a self-guided visit to the African Galleries
£20 per group (including a free small copy of the
book read during the session)

As they explore examples of African
beadwork from the Museum’s handling collection, students explore
shapes, patterns and counting in this lively interactive
session.

Students discover traditional music from
different regions of the continent of Africa, trying out
instruments and learning about their origins. Then, using a
combination of real instruments and digital music samples they
create a class composition inspired by traditional forms which can
be taken or sent back to school. This session takes place in the
Samsung Digital Discovery Centre.

Duration: 3 hours including gallery visit and
lunch break

Key Stage 2
Looking at the people of Benin

This slideshow introduces students to the
different people connected with the Oba’s palace in Benin. They
explore pictures of the Oba, his staff and the first European
visitors and find out about links between symbols and the local
environment.

This session takes place in the Sainsbury
African Galleries, where students explore clothes, jewellery and
personal appearance in a selection of African countries. They
discuss how and why people dress differently for different
occasions.
