What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

For Year 5 and 6 students only.

This session explores the varied lifestyles of five ancient societies by examining artefacts made around the world at the same moment in time. Students research their artefact and then create an exciting multimedia broadcast to share back at school.

Session time: 10.30 - 14.00 (includes a gallery visit and lunch break.)
The literacy level required for some of the activities makes this session unsuitable for students below Year 5.
