What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Objects in motion

Classroom resource
Age 7–11, 12–16, 16+

The representation of movement has been an interest of artists for millennia. In every culture there are images of people and things moving and objects in which movement is implicit.

The British Museum collection is rich in artefacts that demonstrate this theme. This teacher guide offers ideas to get you started thinking about motion in the Museum and suggested projects for the classroom.
