What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

For teachers of Key Stages 1 and 2.

This one-day course run by the Visual Learning Foundation will introduce the new 2014 art and design curriculum and provide support on assessing art and design, using artists’ work and resources to stimulate ideas, requisitioning the right art materials and good display. The Shang Dynasty in China will be the inspiration for practical workshops in drawing and printmaking. Teachers will visit the Hotung Gallery and develop sketchbook ideas for their art work.
