Coenwulf mancusSubscriptions and donations made through the British Museum Friends support the acquisition of important objects, to complement the Museum’s complex and unique collection, held for the benefit of future generations.

Members contribute to the Museum’s research programme, designed to deepen knowledge and promote understanding of the collection.

In 2006, Members raised more than £130,000 to support the acquisition of a new Scanning Electron Microscope for the Museum’s Department of Conservation, Documentation and Science.

This vital piece of equipment is central to the long-term care of seven million objects and to the continued curatorial investigation process; helping to identify the materials from which the objects are made and shedding light on their history and the cultures that produced them.

Since its earliest days the Museum has relied on the generosity of donors and supporters – a public lottery was held to secure the £20,000 needed to purchase Hans Sloane’s initial collection for the nation. Please give as generously as you can to support the Museum’s work and the development of its collection today.
