A guide to using Young Explorers safely

We hope you enjoy Young Explorers. But there are some things you need to know that will make sure you keep enjoying the site and stay safe online.

Playing our games

When you finish our Time Explorer game we’ll ask if you want to save your progress, so you can come back and continue your adventure.

To do that we’ll need some information from you.

If you are under 12, you MUST get your parent, teacher or guardian's permission before registering to use the Time Explorer.

We will ask for:

  • Your email address, which we need in case you forget your password. We will not send you any emails unless you ask us to tell you what your password is.
  • A username that will appear on our scoreboard – if your score is good enough! When you choose a username, pick something interesting like a nickname. Don’t ever use your real name.
  • A password. Pick one, but don’t tell anyone what it is. If you use a mixture of letters and numbers, it will make it harder for anyone else to work it out

Talk to an adult if you feel unsafe or unsure about anything you see online, especially if you see something that upsets you.

It is important you read through these rules and be sure to get your parent, teacher or guardian to read them too and talk to you about them.

Your work

We want you to send us photographs of stuff you've created so we can show them off in our online gallery. But please only send photographs of your own work. It’s very important that you don’t send us something that belongs to someone else, unless you have their permission.

Sometimes we might want to use the pictures you send us in other places on our website, in adverts or in print. By sending us a picture you (as an individual) are giving us (the British Museum) permission to do this.

But don’t worry, we would never give permission for anyone else to use your pictures.

If we like your work, we’ll put it on the website, but we can't guarantee that the site will always be live, and we're afraid that we can’t send your work back to you if you post it to us.

For adults

We make every effort to ensure children have a fun and safe experience while using Young Explorers.

We ask all children under the age of 12 to get their parent(s), guardian(s), carer's or teacher's permission to register to save their progress on our Time Explorer game.

  • Minimal personal details are required and collected for sign-in
  • We ask children to use nicknames only
  • We collect email address so that we can remind children of their password if we need to

All users can report any content on the game scoreboard that they think is rude or offensive either by clicking on the Report offensive material button or by sending an email to youngexplorers@britishmuseum.org. We will then consider removing such content as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about safety on the Young Explorers website please contact us at: youngexplorers@britishmuseum.org
