Head of Hadrian

From: River Thames, London
Date: 2nd century AD

The Emperor Hadrian arrived in Britain in AD 122. This bronze head, larger than life size, was found in the River Thames near London Bridge - the rest of the statue is still lost.

Hadrian was the first Roman emperor to wear a beard and he made beards popular throughout the empire. You can just make out his beard if you look carefully. Hadrian is famous today for the 80-mile-long wall he had built across the north of Britain to protect the northern boundary of the province of Britannia. You can still see parts of this wall today.
