Sir Isaac Newton

From: London, England
Date: AD 1718

This bust is of Sir Isaac Newton, the most famous scientist of the time. Newton is most famous for being inspired by watching an apple fall from a tree. He wondered if gravity had made this happen, and if it was the same gravity that kept the moon circling the earth. He also is known for his laws of motion, however he worked on many other scientific topics too.

The bust was carved out of elephant ivory by the artist David Le Marchand. Elephant ivory is very tough with a smooth white finish, ideal for carving.
