The Doge of Venice

From: Venice, Italy
Date: around AD 1763-67

Venice traded goods by ship all over the Mediterranean and became one of the richest cities in the world. To celebrate this link with the sea, each year the Doge, the ruler of Venice, would perform a ceremony called 'the Marriage with the Sea'.

The artist Canaletto has drawn the start of this ceremony in this picture called ‘The Doge of Venice Departing for the Lido’. In the middle of the picture is the huge official state boat which would carry the Doge out to sea. When he got there he would drop a gold ring into the water to once again marry Venice to the sea.
