Portrait of Henry VII
From: Venice, Italy
Date: around AD 1500
Henry Tudor became King Henry VII of England by seizing the throne in 1485. He reigned for 24 years and founded the strong Tudor line which lasted until the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603.
This flask looks like pottery but is actually made of white glass. It has a portrait of King Henry VII on one side and his personal emblem, the Tudor portcullis, on the other. It was made in Venice and is thought to have been a special present for Henry VII, perhaps a gift from another country in order to keep the peace.
