Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 771. The Franks lived in France, but Charlemagne wanted a bigger kingdom, so he invaded many nearby countries, and eventually managed to become ruler of most of western Europe.
Rulers could make sure people knew who they were by making coins. Every coin had Charlemagne's name on one side and a few also had his picture. This coin was made in what is now called the Netherlands, and could have been spent anywhere in Charlemagne's kingdom.
