Leaders and rulers
in Europe

When the huge Roman Empire fell, new countries sprang up mostly ruled by their own kings. It was important for these kings to show their newly-gained power by doing things like leading their people in war, or even just by issuing new coins with their names on.

In the east of Europe, however, the idea of the Roman empire carried on for hundreds of years, although it became called the Byzantine Empire.
