“For being of Jewish ancestry”
From: Spain
Date: about AD 1814-24
The kings and people of Spain were members of the Catholic Church, and they wanted everyone living in their country to be Catholic. They formed a group called the Inquisition to hunt out and punish those people, like Jews, who held other faiths.
Goya y Lucientes was the most famous painter in Spain. He thought that punishing people for having a different religion was wrong. Goya drew this picture of Jewish people being forced to wear tall hats and paper tunics by a Catholic priest and a soldier holding a sword. The title shows his disgust with what is happening.
