Women with a field gun
From: Vietnam
Date: AD 1965
From 1965 to 1975 the Vietnam War raged between communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The United States sent hundreds of thousands of troops to help the South.
Quang Tho was an artist and soldier with the North Vietnamese army. He drew what he saw, sometimes even at the same time as he was being bombed or fired at. This drawing shows three women operating a large gun. A roof has been built over it so that American aircraft can’t spot it.
Eventually the United States was forced to withdraw its troops, and in 1975 North Vietnam won the war. The two countries were merged into the ‘Socialist Republic of Vietnam’.
