Shintō is the native religion of Japan, and this beautiful scroll painting shows a Shintō festival. Several men are using poles held over their shoulders to carry a huge tree in a basket. The tree is decorated with white strips of paper which look like flowers.
The men are dressed mostly in white festival clothes. The two leaders are wearing full ceremonial dress and carrying swords. They all look excited and happy.
The artist has signed his work 'Kō Sūkei’.
