Anglo-Saxon England

'Anglo-Saxon' is the name given to the different groups of people who sailed across the channel and the North Sea and settled in England after the Romans left Britain in AD 410. They were to continue as the leading culture for over 500 years until the Norman Conquest in AD 1066.

Over time people joined together to form a number of powerful groups which developed into royal kingdoms such as Mercia and Wessex. These finally unified to become the kingdom of England in the 900s.
