Warriors storming a city

From: Xanthos (Lykian)
Date: about 390-380 BC

This is part of a frieze from a huge tomb called the Nereid Monument, from Lykia in what is now Turkey. The stone slab shows soldiers besieging a city by surrounding it and trying to force their way in. The people inside are trying to hold out and defend themselves.

The attacking warriors, carrying large round shields, are climbing a ladder set against the city walls. Two of their comrades are crouching under the ladder and pulling on ropes to stop the defending soldiers on the city walls pushing the ladder over backwards.
