Cup showing farming
Made in: Greece
Date: about 575-550 BC
Although much of Greece was stony and dry, it was possible to grow crops in some areas. One man painted on this cup is driving a strong ox that is pulling a plough; the other seems to be scattering seed from a small basket.
The goddess of harvests and farming was Demeter, and farming was sometimes called 'the work of Demeter'. On the other side of this cup people are dancing in her honour.
