The goddess of witchcraft

From: made in Athens, Greece
Date: about 350-300 BC

The goddess Hekate was linked to magic and witchcraft. Altars to worship her were often placed at crossroads, and some contained statues of Hekate with three heads or three bodies.

This jug has been painted to show Hekate or one of her priestesses. On the right you can just see an altar with flames coming out of it. Hekate is dancing wildly in front of the altar with flaming torches in her hands. The black background makes her look magically lit-up, and she would originally have been coloured gold.
