Gods and spirits in ancient Greece

The ancient Greeks believed in many gods and goddesses who influenced all aspects of life. They kept the gods happy with small presents (called ‘offerings’) and by sacrificing animals at great festivals. At festivals, the Greeks also held athletics and theatre competitions in honour of the gods.

The Greeks also believed that the gods could answer their questions and give advice at places called oracles. However, a few Greek philosophers questioned ordinary people's beliefs about the gods.
