Model of a beehive?

From: Athens, Greece
Date: about 730-700 BC

Many models like this one have been found in graves in Athens, sometimes on their own, sometimes in groups. The models are rather a mystery: they could be beehives, or perhaps model granaries, the little rooms where grain was kept.

People might put model granaries in their graves to show how wealthy they were in life, meaning that their lands gave them lots of grain. But it is also likely that they are beehives: the Greeks thought that bees and honey had strong links with life after death.
