Model of an actor

From: Asia Minor (modern Turkey)
Date: 2nd century BC

This is a model of a Greek actor wearing an old man's mask with squinting eyes, a grinning mouth and a long beard. He's also wearing two wreaths on his head - one made of leaves and the other tied with ribbons.

Little clay statues of actors were used to decorate tombs and houses. Theatre was very important to the ancient Greeks, who used plays to explore ideas about politics and how you should lead your life. Plays that they wrote down more than 2,500 years ago are still being performed today.
