Block from the Great Pyramid
From: Giza
Date: around 2570 BC
The three largest pyramids were built at Giza in the Fourth Dynasty. The most famous of these pyramids, known as the 'Great Pyramid', was built for the pharaoh Khufu.
Thousands of people worked for several years to build The Great Pyramid. First many steps were built up layer by layer, then it was given a final coating of limestone so that the outside was completely smooth. This block of limestone is taken from this outer layer. A final block covered in gold was placed on the very top. Khufu’s body was placed inside in a special chamber surrounded by treasures.
