Leaders and rulers in
Ancient Egypt

Until about 3100 BC, Egypt was divided into two kingdoms: Upper and Lower Egypt. The Nile flows from south to north, so Upper Egypt is actually in the south and Lower Egypt in the northern part of the country.

After Upper and Lower Egypt were united, its rulers were known as pharaohs, which means 'great house'. Pharaohs were worshipped by their people as living gods.
