In ancient times a huge range of wild animals, birds and fish lived in the Nile Valley. Egyptians hunted these creatures for food and sport. As a result, many native animals – such as lions and cobras - have died out over the years.
The ancient Egyptians reared cattle, sheep and geese for food. They also kept dogs, cats and sometimes monkeys in their homes as pets as they helped to keep rats and mice away from grain stores.
