Ear decoration
The Etruscans used to live in parts of Italy. This ear decoration was made by an Etruscan craftsman for a wealthy woman to wear on special occasions.
The decoration was one of a pair. It is made of thin gold sheet skilfully hammered to shape, and ornamented with tiny spheres (balls), wire and flower petals cut out of gold. It is much bigger than an earring and covered the lower part of the ear, resting against the side of the neck.
A few final facts...
The decoration is typical of Etruscan jewellery, with its rich
appearance, striking style and technical complexity. Etruscan
metalworkers produced many fine items not only in gold, but also in
bronze and silver.
