The Royal Game of Ur

This is one of the oldest board games in the Museum. Two players would throw a dice and move their pieces from one end to the other. The board is still brightly coloured, and is hollow inside to store the counters and dice. Can you see the four-sided dice? How many pieces did each player have?

You can play the Royal Game of Ur on-line at The British Museum's Mesopotamia website (requires Shockwave).

What kind of game? The Royal Game of Ur is a race game where the first one to move all his pieces off the end wins. Luck with the dice is needed, but also some skill.
