Myriad means 'many different', and this scroll shows 33 different fish. They were painted by 12 different artists. The Japanese writing next to each fish is the signature of each artist. One of the artists, Suzuki Hyakunen, was the father of another, Suzuki Shônen. Both these men were from a group of painters known as the Kyoto School. The scroll was probably painted by other artists from the group and their pupils, working together.
Can you see a large sea bream to the left, and an eel?
